Bibimbap (/ˈbiːbɪmbæp/ BEE-bim-bap, from Korean bibimbap [pi.bim.p͈ap̚], literally "mixed rice"), sometimes romanized as bi bim bap or bi bim bop, is a Korean rice dish. The term “bibim” means mixing various ingredients, while the “bap” noun refers to rice. Bibimbap is served as a bowl of warm white rice topped with namul (sautéed and seasoned vegetables) and gochujang (chili pepper paste), soy sauce, or doenjang (a fermented soybean paste). A raw or fried egg and sliced meat (usually beef) are common additions. The hot dish is stirred together thoroughly just before eating.Wikipedia
But in Mark's dictionary, Bibimbap is simply:
My favorite cheat meal!
Yes, while cheat meals mean burgers, pizzas, and all oily food for most people, Mark's favorite cheat meal, is Bibimbap (which is still technically on the healthy side).
Bibimbap x The Hungry Coach |
I first introduced him to Bibimbap last year, when I ordered one for home delivery from Koryo. I wasn't able to finish my bowl so I had him eat the rest. He got hooked since then. And so whenever it's time for his cheat meal, he'd always request for Bibimbap. If you've been following me on Instagram (if you still haven't, you can follow me now: @kriskamarie :p), I'm sure you've seen my Bibimbap posts and stories. :p
I've been having Bibimbap before from a Korean restaurant in the Philippines, since it's also one of our family's favorite dishes. When I got to Dubai, Koryo has been my go to place for some Bibimbap fix.
Bibimbap with Bulgogi Beef - AED 32 |
Koryo's Bibimbap has a generous serving; one bowl can actually satisfy 2 non-big eaters. I get full after eating half of the bowl, so Mark always finishes the rest. It has 7 different kinds of veggies, with sunny side up egg, and a choice of either Kalbi Chicken or Kalbi Beef (which we always request to be changed to Bulgogi Beef). It's also affordable at AED 32 per bowl—AED 24 for the Bibimbap (rice bowl with veggies and egg) and additional AED 8 for the meat.
We usually order it for delivery if we're not dining at their Burjuman branch; and either way, serving time and delivery time are both pretty fast. There was just one instance when they forgot to include the gochujang, so the delivery guy had to go back.
Mark and I both haven't been to Korea yet so, admittedly, we can't really tell if what we had was the authentic one. But Koryo's version is just so good that's why we keep coming back for it. :D
