Burgers are arguably the ultimate comfort food–that big, fat, juicy beef patty with crisp lettuce, onions, tomatoes, and a gooey melted cheese, sandwiched on a butter toasted bun. But have you ever had a vegan burger? I actually got curious when I first heard of Dirt, who offers vegan burgers. Yes, vegan! No beef, no chicken, no meat!
Tried their Tex Mex Burger for lunch at work yesterday. The burger came in an insulated wrapper and a sturdy box, keeping it warm and secure. It consists of a no-chicken patty, some guacamole, jalapeño, lettuce, and chipotle mayo in a multi-grain bun.
So how's it like, you might ask. Well, it may not be the best-looking burger but its taste was close to an authentic chicken burger. I picked out the jalapeños because I just simply have low tolerance with hot and spicy food, but I loved the combination of flavors from the guac and chipotle mayo.
As per the menu, the no-chicken patty is a high-protein wheat dough mixed with corn, chickpeas, and white quinoa. It had a bit of a mushy feel to the bite, but the corn somehow added texture to it. Had it not because of the somehow mushy texture of the patty, I wouldn't have known that I'm eating a no-meat burger. The bun wasn't as soft as I'd like it to be, though.
If you compare it with the usual meat burgers, you'll probably say that you can get one at a lower price, but that would definitely be not as healthy as what Dirt offers. Quite ironic for its name, Dirt's menu caters to vegans, vegetarians, or even those who just want to eat clean. I heard their Big Man and Arabiata burgers are also good. Will definitely give that a try next time.
