Mark and I got to spend another Friday night over some drinks and chill music after a filling dinner, a couple of weekends back. Special thanks to our friends from Carter's Bar & Restaurant for having us over.
Carter's Bar & Restaurant, located at Pyramids Wafi, is one of the gastro pubs in Dubai which is perfect for a chill night. Its interiors radiate a colonial charm which evident in its extensive bar, elevated dining areas reminiscent of a cozy house, and a focal stage.
Mark and I were greeted when we arrived and ushered to our seats. Thankfully, the table reserved for us is in the elevated dining area, which gave us an ample view of the place and the stage. I loved how the tables were stationed far from each other, still giving that private space for the guests even when the whole place gets occupied.
Mark and I agreed that Carter's is a perfect place for when you want to chill with family and friends, just like the rest of the crowds that night which are mostly groups of friends unwinding after a hard day's work.
We started the night with some filling dinner. Complimentary hot bread and butter were served after we placed our orders.
We were also provided with the menu for the drinks, so I thought of ordering food that will go well with our drinks. We had Crispy Calamari for our starters, and for the mains, I had the Slowly Braised and Smoked Beef Short Rib, while Mark opted for the Fillet Steak.
Though it looked like the same old calamari dishes, I couldn't stop munching on this baby squid rings coated with light and crisp well-seasoned batter. It wasn't oily at all and had that crispy outer crust with tender and mildly sweet baby squid. The shichimi togarashi and spicy tartar sauce was also a perfect addition. I loved how I can tolerate its spiciness.
I also liked how generous the serving was, it felt like I had been munching non-stop but there was still enough squids left for Mark and I to share and pair with our cocktail drinks.
Crispy Calamari - AED 45
Mark's Steak Fillet included an 8oz beef slab cooked medium well, grilled tomato and roasted mushrooms, plus a choice of one side dish--mashed potato as per Mark's choice. Although tender and maintained its juiciness, the meat didn't have something impressive taste-wise. I found it a bit on the salty side. Mark also noted how it was decent but a bit pricey considering its taste and quality.
While most steak dishes would make you drool the moment it is served, I don't know but I just thought there's something missing in this dish. Maybe Carter's should work on their food presentation. :p
Fillet Steak - AED 160
I enjoyed my short ribs better. Though still not that appealing to the eyes, I was still overwhelmed when it was served. It came in two huge chunks of beef, coated with a semi-sweet and salty gravy, on a bed of potato and mustard mashed. Slowly braised and smoked, the beef was fork tender and had that melt-in-your-mouth feel in every bite.
The potato and mustard mash was also a revelation. I loved how it still had that chunks which gave a little texture to the bite and that zing from the mustard which eventually kicks in.
Slowly Braised and Smoked Beef Short Rib - AED 90
Raspberry Cosmopolitan - AED 45
For a more adventurous gal, the Bull Frog is highly recommended. It is a mixture of vodka, gin, Bacardi, Blue Curacao sweet and sour mix, and Red Bull. Served in a huge glass, this sure made me feel dizzy when I gulped it down.
While I am (not that adventurous but) definitely the more adventurous type than Mark when it comes to alcoholic drinks, Mark always sticks to his all-time favorite Jaiger Bomb, a mixture or Jaigermeister and Red Bull. I call this one the traitor drink, as it would make you feel hyped because of the energy drink but then will suddenly knock you down. I bet Mark already felt like it that he begged off after his glass. :p
Jaiger Bomb (AED 55) and Bull Frog (AED 50)
For the less adventurous chic, a variety of mocktails are also available just like this Virgin Strawberry Daiquiri which had that perfect sweet and citrus blend. It also comes in lemon flavor.
Virgin Daiquiri Strawberry - AED 26
All throughout the evening, we were also serenaded by Feti Blue & the Blues Train, Carter's in-house band.
I was already feeling dizzy and needed something to tame it all down, so I obliged when the staff offered us the dessert menu. When I read that they have something like chocolate fondant, I knew I had to get it.
Just by looking at how the hot rich chocolate oozes out, I already felt revived, more so when I had my first spoonful. The cake base was moist and decadent and the filling was rich and chocolaty. It just had the right amount of sweetness too. And with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, aaaahhh..I can have this all day! Mark also approves of it!
If you're eyeing a relaxed night where you can still be intimate with your date or where you can still chat with your family and friends over some drinks, decent food, and chill music, go ahead and give Carter's Bar & Restaurant a visit and let me know what you think. :)
