History of the Cocktail Dress

In general, the cocktail dress as a dress style is something between the festive and business clothes. Cocktail dress is a shortened gown for the solemn events, without collar and sleeves, which is usually worn in a combination with open shoes. The cocktail dress first appeared in USA in 1920s, at the height of the era of "Prohibition" and Jazz Age, when the female look was dramatically changing and the evening dresses were becoming shorter and plainer. The cocktail dresses were worn for private parties where people were served with alcohol drinks and jazz music was played.

The cocktail dress got its name from the special drink. It is usually served at the cocktail party. "Shady Lady", "Pink Rose" or "Fallen Angel" are the names of those most famous cocktails which contributed to the inspiration of outspoken designers to create the unique outfits. The designers used such tissues as chiffon and silk. Only expensive fabrics were taken. Evening attires were more official than the cocktail dresses. The cocktail dresses, in their turn, were different from the casual clothes by its elegance and sophistication.

Initially, the cocktail dresses were designed for the young girls only: such dress barely covered the knees, was up-to-date with the latest fashion trends and was made of expensive but not luxurious fabrics, also richly decorated with embroidery, beads and sequins.

The accessories chosen for the cocktail dress were also appropriate: a little female bag which used to contain only lipstick or puff-box. So, when purchase of a cocktail dress was under discussion, accessories were also on the list. The absence of sleeves was usually compensated with elegant long gloves, little hat as an accessory for such dress was also welcomed.

Nowadays, you can find cocktail dresses of various fashions, made of excellent tissues. The most popular of those over the last several decades are discounted sequin cocktail dresses, as well as silk and chiffon gowns. Every season, a cocktail dress insensibly changes or gets some new details. It’s more often about the length: it either rises almost to the hips, or descends until the ankles.

A classical “little black dress” has not lost its freshness and appeal over the years. In 21st century it is still a universal attire for the cocktail parties of different kinds. Here you can find elegant black cocktail dress online. Bright cocktail dresses, made of velvet, crepe, brocade, silk, elastic satin and even rich decorative fabrics, will fit well for the official, as well as for unofficial events. So, the choice of length, color, fashion and fabric for the dress is only up to you.
