Enjoy Iftar...the Italian Way, Only at Eataly!

Just when you think that Iftar always has to be an Arabic dinner, Eataly has created a special menu for breaking your fast during Ramadan with an Italian twist . Cherry and I were invited to grace the Iftar preview in Eataly at the Dubai Mall a few weeks back.

We were served with breads and a glass of Jallab while waiting for our orders to be served. As I've read and as what Mark has also been telling me, fasting during Ramadan is usually broken by eating dates first, so I thought having it in a form of a drink was a brilliant idea.

Jallab is a medley of date syrup and rosewater, topped with pine nuts and raisins. And since I've become a date lover since I came here, falling in love with this sweet, semi-sour, and refreshing Jallab, with an added crunch from the pine nuts and raisins, was a no-brainer. :)

There are two available set menus where guests can choose from soup, salad, and main course with a finale of Date Tiramisu for only 89 AED or 119 AED per person.

Cherry and I thought of trying each set out. :D For our starters, we had our choice of soup and salad each. Cherry had Insalata del Giardino--mixed green salad, cherry tomatoes, red radish, croutons, carrots, and onions served with balsamic dressing; and Minestrone soup drizzled with pesto sauce. The broth was rich in flavor and the vegetables tasted fresh and still maintained that crunch.

I then opted for Elegante for my salad and Minestra di Orzo soup. The salad has corella pears, parmigiano, mixed greens, and cherry tomatoes, topped with walnuts and balsamic dressing. The depth of flavors from the salty cheese, sweet pears, savory tomatoes, walnuts, and tangy balsamic vinegar were perfect altogether. I also loved the play of texture from the crunchy pears, walnuts, and cherry tomatoes.

The soup which was a combination of lentil, barley, chic peas, and borlotti beans was equally delicious. I grew up having pusi, an Ilocano soup also made of beans and lentil, and this one tasted just like that which I so loved.

For the mains, there's a choice of pizza or pasta, and meat or fish. I had an order of the Salsiccia e Funghi pizza while Cherry opted for the meat dish, Vitello Arrosto.

The pizza is already good for 2-3 people. With beef sausage, mozzarella fior di latte, “Antonella” tomato sauce, mushrooms, and fresh basil on top of fresh hand-tossed crust, this is undeniably delectable. I love how the crust was slightly crunchy and chewy at the same time, and how it was not so thick which brings out the flavors of the toppings. This one's my personal favorite!

Another personal favorite, and a must-try if I may add, is the Vitello Arrosto. The roasted veal eye round were cut into a half-inch thick slices which swam over a rich savory meat gravy. The meat was fork tender and was very flavorful. The rich gravy made it even more delectable. It comes with a choice of side dish, and we opted for the mashed potato, which was a perfect choice! It was creamy and chunky at the same time. The taste of milk and butter were evident. It was so good!

Tiramisu con Datteri was served for our dessert. It is basically tiramisu with dates. This creamy dessert had that different texture than usual tiramisu. It is mildly sweet and had a texture of a flan with some grains which I believe was from the ground dates, but it was definitely approved by my palates. The date topping was also a nice addition and made this dessert look simple yet elegant.
