Last Wednesday was Ash Wednesday which marked the start of the season of Lent. And since meat is not allowed during the season, the next best alternative would be fish.
Fried fish would always be a common dish during Lent, but this tends to be dry and bland, so I'm sharing with you this easy sweet and sour fish recipe that I'm sure you'll enjoy. It's basically deep fried cream dory chunks and deep fried tofu in sweet and sour sauce with pineapples, onions, and bell peppers.
I cooked this for lunch on Ash Wednesday and my family loved it! :D
Ingredients:
Sweet and Sour Sauce:
1/3 cup vinegar
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 cup orange juice
1/4 cup pineapple juice
1/4 cup ketchup
2 tbsp cornstarch dissolved in 1/4 cup water
Preparation and Cooking Procedures:
Wash tofu with running water, cut into chunks and set aside. Wash cream dory fillets with running water and dry with paper towel. Cut fish into chunks, coat with breading, and set aside.
Deep fry the tofu in a wok with oil over high heat until golden brown. Drain tofu and set aside.

In the same wok, deep fry the fish chunks until golden brown. Drain and set aside.

In a sauce pan, mix all the wet ingredients plus the sugar and bring to a boil.

Add the bell peppers and onions and simmer for 2 minutes.

Pour the cornstarch mixture into the sauce and stir until sauce has thickened. Stir in the pineapple chunks and remove from heat.

In a clean serving dish, lay the fish and tofu and top with the sweet and sour sauce. Serve with steamed rice and enjoy!

Other fish may be used for this recipe like tilapia. Since the sauce is on the red hue, green bell peppers may be used for a more colorful dish. :)

Yup perfect for Lent! Thanks Maiylah! Happy hearts day! ♥
DeleteI always forget to let go of the meat during Lent, usually, we don't eat meat every Fridays during this season. I haven't tried adding sauce to my Cream Dory fish... this looks like a good way to do so.
ReplyDeleteYeah actually you're right. Our family also doesn't religiously take out meat during the whole season of Lent. We just do away with meat on Ash Wednesday and every Fridays too. Thanks for dropping by Jenn! :)
